4 Cheap Beer Brewing Equipment Options

So I have covered the minimum equipment needed to start home brewing beer (for $400 buying everything separate), but what every new brewer needs to start is to make it cost effective. Here are some ways to reduce your costs by getting cheap beer brewing equipment. For the record, cheap means inexpensive and not short life span.

Well, to get started, I will head over to Amazon and find the parts and pieces you need to get going. This post will contain links to Amazon so that you can find it easier, but what I will show are three beer brewing starter kits and then some links to see if I can beat them.

I will also give you what parts you may also need to purchase to complete the starter kit if anything is missing.

As an affiliate, I may receive commission on your purchase but the cost is the same regardless of how you find the kits. The links included will the list price as of February 14th, 2019, but the price is subject to change.

Northern Brewer Home Brewing Starter Set

As far as starter sets go, this one is tough to beat on price. You can get their Block Party Amber or Chinook IPA.

What you get:

  • One recipe kit (your first batch of beer!)
  • 6.5 gallon fermenter with lid and airlock
  • Bottling bucket with spigot and a bottle filler
  • 5 gallon stainless steel brew kettle
  • 21″ Stainless steel spoon
  • Auto siphon and tubing
  • Cleaner/sanitizer
  • Bottle brush, bottle capper, and 60 bottle caps

What is missing from my recommended minimum:

When all is said and done, you will be paying around $175 to be enjoying your first batch of beer. Next time you are at your local store, check out the craft beers and see how your $21.88 6-packs match up.

Your next batch of home brew you will have to check out the recipe before going. If it requires you to boil all 5-gallons of water then the brew kettle supplied here is too small. The Brewcraft Rogue Dead Guy kit would work perfectly with this one.

To be honest, that is a really good deal to get started with the majority of the minimum equipment I recommend. What if I found a more cheap beer brewing equipment option?

Midwest Supplies Starter Kit

The cost is what drew me to the Midwest Supplies Pale Ale recipe and starter kit.

What you get:

  • Beer recipe kit
  • 6.5 gallon fermenter with lid and airlock
  • Bottling bucket with spigot and bottle filler
  • Siphon and tubing
  • Adhesive fermentation thermometer
  • Hydrometer and test jar
  • Bottle brush and bottle capper
  • Oxygen Wash Cleaner/Sanitizer

What is missing from my recommended minimum:

  • 5-gallon brew kettle
  • Stirring spoon
  • Bottles but you will need 2
  • Bottle caps
  • Optional: Thermometer from above. When you steep grains you don’t want to deviate from 160 F by very much or it could affect the taste of your beer. That being said, the critical temperature in the process is your fermenter and it is covered here.

Look at that…I did find some more cheap beer brewing equipment. The total cost would be around $135 but you could add the thermometer from above and still only come in at $145. This would also be the chance to get a larger brew kettle if you want to make sure you can make any recipe available.

This time, you now have 8 6-packs of craft beer for $16.88 each. That is getting closer to what I usually see in the store. Now, here is another starter kit that isn’t cheaper but has some more bells and whistles if you are really interested.

Northern Brewer Deluxe Home Brewing Starter Set

For this one you will get more than my recommended minimum, but if you plan ongoing forward with your brewing this would be your set. For this one I will put in a larger brew kettle so that you can make every recipe kit available. This is not a cheap beer brewing equipment set, but it is a good one.

You have four options to choose from (Caribou Slobber Brown Ale, Chinook IPA, Fresh Squished IPA, or Irish Red Ale).

What you get:

  • Beer recipe kit
  • 6-gallon glass primary fermenter with bung and air lock
  • 5-gallon glass secondary fermenter with bung and air lock
  • Blowoff Hose
  • Adhesive Thermometers
  • Auto Siphon and tubing
  • Bottling Bucket with spigot and bottle filler
  • Bottle capper and bottle caps
  • Carboy (fermenter) and bottle brushes

What is missing from my recommended minimum (the bonus here is the secondary fermenter and both fermenters are glass carboys):

  • Brew kettle
  • Stirring spoon
  • Hydrometer
  • Bottles but you will need 2
  • Optional: Thermometer from above. When you steep grains you don’t want to deviate from 160 F by very much or it could affect the taste of your beer. That being said, the critical temperature in the process is your fermenter and it is covered here.

As I said, this is the kit for those planning to move on to more difficult kits and eventually all-grain brewing. It will cost around $325 or $40.62 per 6-pack. Now the question is, can I beat the Midwest Supplies kit for price?

My Cheap Beer Brewing Equipment Starter Set

We have established that I need to find you the equipment you need for under $16.73 per 6-pack of craft beer. Here is my cheap beer brewing equipment starter set

So, I found a recipe I liked and a cleaner and carried down the costs from some of the above kits. This alone brings me to around $140 which is already more expensive than the Midwest Supplies starter kit.

Time to Pick Your Cheap Beer Brewing Equipment

You now have 4 options to choose from with standard kits plus a few add-ons.

  • Northern Brewer Home Brewing Starter Set – $175 or $21.88 per 6-pack
  • Midwest Supplies Starter Set – $135 or $16.88 per 6-pack
  • Northern Brewer Deluxe Home Brewing Starter Set – $325 or $40.62 per 6-pack
  • My Cheap Beer Brewing Equipment Starter Set – Not worth finishing :), but I will keep looking

For my pick, I would start with the Midwest Supplies Starter set. It is a good kit to grow with and will be great to start with.

If you want what I think would be your best option it is the Midwest kit with the added thermometer and replace the 5-gallon brew kettle with the 8-gallon in the Northern Brewer Deluxe kit. This would give you a kit for around $185 which gives you the ability to make almost every beer recipe kit you can find.
