Beer of the Month Club Review – Craft Beer Delivered

Beer of the month club deliveredYou are probably wondering how a beer of the month club review wound up in a home brewing website. Well, it is because the website is for craft beer but I hadn’t yet got around to writing about it. I was caught up brewing and got side-tracked.
So, that being said, when researching the different beer of the month clubs I went with a couple criteria…options and price.

Pretty simple criteria, but if you want to enjoy some craft beer you have to be willing to try different things. Of the ones I found, my favorite was the Beer Month Club. Keep reading to find out why…

Beer Month Club – So Many Options

This beer of the month club is part of a larger monthly club group. Although I will be focusing on your craft beer options, here are some of the other monthly clubs (that I was surprised to see) you could browse:

  • Wine Monthly Club – If you like wine (not my favorite, hence a beer site),
this seems like a pretty good deal. You have 4 different subscriptions to choose and if you find a wine you like, they offer a discounted price to order more.
  • Cheese Monthly Club – You want to pair your beer with some cheese? They offer 2 subscriptions for monthly cheese delivery.
  • Chocolate Monthly Club – Want to stay out of the doghouse with your new beer of the month club? You can order about 1-pound of chocolate to be delivered monthly.
  • Cigar Monthly Club – Having the girls (or guys) over for a monthly get together? You can have cigars delivered and pair it with your beer. There are 2 subscriptions and they also offer discounted pricing if you find a cigar you really enjoy.
  • Fresh Cut Flower Monthly Club – Pretty straight forward, you can get a seasonal bouquet delivered days after the flowers are cut.
  • Design Your Own Monthly Club – This one will get its own section below. There are many things you can do and I don’t want to squeeze it into a bullet point.

Ok, those are nice but you are here for the beer of the month club. Let’s break those down…

5 Beer of the Month Club Options

You are either reading because you love craft beer or want to learn about craft beer. Each of the

The U.S. Microbrewed Beer Club

You get the following:

  • 12 beers from two different lightly distributed breweries
  • 4 different beer styles
  • 3 different beers in each style
  • A newsletter containing tasting notes, beer profiles, brewery histories, and suggested food pairings

Some recently featured breweries are Foothills Brewing, Lazy Magnolia Brewing Company, O’so Brewing Company, and more!!!

This is the original beer of the month club that started it all for them in 1994. Their goal is to deliver variety by varying styles in the month and across the different months. They will also include seasonal beers (in season of course) in the months when they are best enjoyed. If you find a beer you really enjoyed, you can re-order them but only while supplies last

The U.S. and International Variety Beer Club

You get the following:

  • 12 beers from two different lightly distributed breweries
  • 4 different beer styles (2 U.S. and 2 Imported)
  • 3 different beers in each style
  • A newsletter containing tasting notes, beer profiles, brewery histories, and suggested food pairings

Some recently featured breweries are the ones listed above plus Moreland Brewing, Ipswich Ale Brewery, Hofbrauhaus Wolters, along with a few more listed on their website.

From the U.S., they will send some of the best (award-winning) craft beers. Internationally, they mix it up between some of the craft beers and the quality traditional beers made in the several hundred-year old breweries. If you find a beer you really enjoyed, you can re-order them but only while supplies last.

The Hop-Heads Beer Club

You get the following:

  • 12 hand-crafted hoppy beers from the U.S. and International breweries
  • 4 different beers (bottles or cans) of 3 different hop-centric beers
  • A newsletter containing tasting notes, beer profiles, brewery histories, and suggested food pairings

Some recently featured breweries are 3 Sheeps Brewing Company, Dick’s Brewing Company, The Lion Brewery, Sand Creek Brewing Co, and Crazy Mountain Brewing Company.

This is the newest beer of the month club they have to offer. You will not be getting just hops in all their bitter glory. Their focus is to showcase the flavors and aromas of the different hops available today. As with all beer of the month clubs, if you find a beer you like you can always re-order some while supplies last.

The International Beer Club

You get the following:

  • 12 beers from two different lightly distributed breweries
  • 2 different beer styles
  • 6 different beers in each style
  • A newsletter containing tasting notes, beer profiles, brewery histories, and suggested food pairings

Some recently featured breweries are Browar Witnica, Staatliches Hofbrauhaus, 961 Beer, plus so many more that I had never seen!

As simple as it sounds, they find beers that aren’t commonly found in the U.S. and bring them to you. They call it a mix of the craft beer renaissance and some traditional breweries (meaning really old). Find a beer you love and you can re-order it before it is gone

The Rare Beer Club

There are a few options here around the amount of beers, but you will get the following:

  • 2, 4, or 6 750mL bottles of “hand-crafted, limited release, artisanal beers” from 2 different breweries
  • 2 different beer styles
  • 1, 2, or 3 beers in each style from each brewery
  • A newsletter containing tasting notes, beer profiles, brewery histories, and suggested food pairings

Some recently featured breweries are The Lost Abbey, Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales, The Bruery, plus 9 more listed on their website.

Their goal is to bring the rarest beers to you. I know that can be worrisome as sometimes rare does not always mean good. Fear not, they will email you before the shipment with some details and you have options to change (or cancel if you want). If you really like a beer, order some and impress your friends (as long as there are some left).

Now that was a lot of options ranging anywhere from $42.95 to $91.95. So you are probably wondering what ever happened to my comments on the design your own club…

Design Your Own Club – Endless Options

This is exactly what is seems. Say you want to get the Rare Beer Club, but don’t want to have it every month. Well, you are in luck! Here are a couple beer of the month club options that I could come up with:

Beer of the Month ClubOption 1 – Rotating Beers

You want to try each of the 5 clubs? You can set it up to deliver a different beer of the month club each month. Start the year off with the Rare Beer Club in January, switch to the International Beer Club in February, and move on to the U.S. Microbrewed Beer Club in March…

Now you have a bunch of different beers that you have tried. If you find one you like, buy the rest of their stock. What happens if they run out? You can always learn to make your favorites (sorry, had to throw that in there).

Option 2 – Dinner Party

You have a dinner party at your house and want to impress your guests? You can order one Beer of the Month club, one Wine of the Month club, and one Cheese of the Month clubs. Then you have drinks and appetizers. Get it a little early and you can find recommended food pairings to really pull together a meal.

Option 3 – Card Night

Have the guys or girls coming over for some cards and late night debauchery? Why not order a Cigar of the Month club and two Beer of the Month clubs? There will be drinks for socializing (remember, this isn’t your drink a bunch at one time beer) and the cigars set the mood for the game

The options are endless. Pick your favorites and tailor it to your desires.

Also, be sure to check the top for any discount codes to save a little bit on your next delivery.

So I Went And Ordered…

I designed my own for a one time delivery. My order was the U.S. Microbrewed Beer Club and the Rare Beer Club (only 2 bottles).

Microbrewed Beer Club

I had actually forgot I ordered the beers and came home from work to a beer of the month clubcouple of boxes waiting for me! I was excited to give it a try. As it said above, I received 3 bottles of four different beers as you see in the picture.

All-in-all, I can’t complain with the selections as they were (from left to right); Czech Pilsner, English Pale Ale, English Porter, and English Brown Ale. They all tasted pretty good, but I will admit the People’s Porter took a few bottles to grow on me.

The delivery also came with a newsletter that told me about the breweries, beer details (alcohol content, glassware, hops, etc.), and some food to try them with. I did not try and pair the beers with the recommended foods because the recommendations aren’t in my normal meal plan.

Overall, this was worth the cost. I hadn’t tried any of them before and have some options to look for at the store.

Rare Beer Club

I had also ordered two bottles of the Rare Beer club, pictured below. Each beer came with a separate newsletter containing the same details as the Microbrewed Beer Club above. Again, I did not pair them with food but that is mostly because I shy away from spicy meals.

I will be the first to admit that I thought I had wasted my money when I opened the box. Usually I will avoid Scotch-Style Ales such as The Lost Abbey’s A Creator’s Calling (on the left), but I was pleasantly surprised by the smoothness (although it packed a punch I wasn’t totally prepared for).

Keeping with the overall disappointment, was the Zipline Brewing Company Maaango! IPA (on the right). I haven’t really liked mango when I have tried it, and IPAs are lower on the list of beers I drink. So what happens when you mix two bad ingredients together? You get a quality beer!

Overall, it was a fun and enlightening experience. I would recommend trying one so you broaden your beer drinking palate.

Where Do You Start
